Polychrome vitrified hard-paste porcelain sculpture, created by Guido Cacciapuoti in the early decades of the 20th century, entirely decorated by hand, depicting a water carrier from ancient Rome, with two amphorae, one in her hand and one on her shoulder. Note the beauty of the face and the richly folded dress, further embellished by the classic geometric decorations of Roman tunics on the lower edge, entirely handmade. The sculpture is signed under the base with the artist’s handwritten signature „G. Cacciapuoti“ in metal nib. Created by Guido Cacciapuoti, one of the most important Italian ceramists of the 20th century. This sculpture is one of the rare pieces made of porcelain in his artistic production; Guido Cacciapuoti usually used ceramic or stoneware for his sculptures.

Guido Cacciapuoti, born in Naples on August 11, 1892, belonged to an ancient family of majolica makers from whom he learned the secrets of ceramic art. A highly talented modeler, he stood out for his beautiful animal sculptures. He moved to Treviso with his brother Mario and worked at the Gregori factory. In 1915, he successfully participated in the Treviso Art Exhibition. He also collaborated occasionally with the Lazzar & Marcon company in Treviso. In 1920, he presented several works at the 12th Venice Biennale and the following year he exhibited at the Treviso Regional Art Exhibition. Some of his works were purchased by the King of Italy, Mussolini, Starace, and Prince George of England. In 1927, together with his brother Mario and Angelo Bignami as the company’s administrative and commercial director, he founded the „Gres d’Arte Cacciapuoti Bignami & C.“ factory, based in Milan at 34 Viale Premuda. In 1930, due to the premature death of his brother, he became the sole owner of the company. The factory was immediately successful and became internationally famous, mainly for the realistic sculptures of animals and ladies created by Guido Cacciapuoti.

Guido Cacciapuoti, geboren am 11. August 1892 in Neapel, entstammte einer alten Familie von Majolikamachern, von denen er die Geheimnisse der Keramikkunst erlernte.
