Both face and reverse carry the same unbroken field of tone-on-tone gold hishi (菱) diamond geometry — concentric diamonds repeating with mathematical precision across the entire surface, each containing a small floral centre rendered in the same gold thread at a slightly different weave angle, so that the pattern reveals itself not through colour but through the play of light alone. The Weave: Kinshi — Gold Thread as Architecture Kinshi (金糸) — gold thread — is the foundation of the Nishijin weaving tradition. In the highest-grade obi, real gold leaf is applied to washi paper, cut into narrow strips, and woven as thread.
